A nature reserve with a rare wealth of fauna and flora that cannot be found anywhere else in Belgium, except in the Zwin. The fresh water of the IJzer, the only river in Belgium that flows directly into the North Sea, mixes with the brackish seawater. Due to the tidal action, a unique area of mudflats and salt marshes has formed, providing an ideal breeding ground for a rich variety of benthic animals such as worms, snails, algae, shellfish, and crustaceans. The continuous interaction between salt and fresh water at the mouth of the IJzer also creates a special habitat characterized by salt-loving plants such as samphire, sea plantain, and lamb's ear. In a few viewing huts, you can see countless sea birds foraging. Seals also find a safe resting place there.
