Freddy Maertens compiled an incredible list of achievements. Two world champion titles and a Belgian tricolore, three times the green jersey at the Tour, overall winner of the Vuelta, nine classic victories, 102 stage wins in various tours. After Freddy Maertens, no Belgian has been able to present such a honor roll. The cyclist drew his strength from hard work and the almost Spartan lifestyle he imposed on himself as an athlete. As a training torturer, he broke through the West Flemish landscape daily and defied the sea wind. He laid the foundation for his fitness in winter, when he hardened his muscles in the dunes or on the beach, along the waterline. During this route, we partially follow the training course of the two-time world champion, who grew up in Lombardsijde.
