Schwabe's garden is the preserved garden of the former estate of the Jewish family Schwabe in Varel.
The family lived in the Lower Saxon town since the first quarter of the 19th century in a corner house and operated a textile wholesale business and a department store there. The last living generation of the family Schwabe-Barlewin in Varel, Curt with his wife Frieda, née Roseno, and their two sons Arthur David and Paul Jakob, fled to the USA in September/October 1938, just days before the Night of Broken Glass.
