The varied route within Bautzen's historic old town and along the old city fortifications offers romantic panoramic views of the city. The "Bautzener Geschichtspfad" (Bautzen History Trail) panel system provides welcome information about the past along the way. The trail has recently gained a new addition - the "Seidau History Trail", where the boards at 10 authentic locations provide information about the history of the objects. The former Sorbian village of Seidau has only officially belonged to Bautzen since 1922.
The pillory house from 1785, for example, is a striking feature. According to legend, thieves and "quarrelsome women" were publicly chained there. The Via Regia once ran along part of today's Seidauer Straße.
