Discover all benefitsThe route starts at the Velodrom Herungerberg in a clockwise direction. You will be presented with 11 noteworthy ascents with elevation differences ranging from 20 to 40 meters.
First, you will traverse the steep edge in the eastern part of Venlo (Arenborgdelweg). After conquering it, you will quickly arrive in Germany and pass the never-completed lock of Louisenburg. Around Herongen, you will be presented with several climbs (Kattenberg, Mühlenberg, Riether Straße and Moalenberg) over the Heronger heights: The western edge of this ridge has somewhat steeper relief, while the eastern edge has very gradual relief.
Next, you will cycle through the forest area and the lake district of Wankumer Heide. Then, you will ride along asphalted roads through farmland toward the Süchtelner Höhen, a ridge between Hinsbeck and Süchteln, often on very quiet roads, with some steep climbs (such as the Koethberg and the Mühlenheuweg) and beautiful ascents (Pollenberg). Then you will cycle parallel to the ridge toward Hinsbeck, passing the hidden castle of Bocholt. Around Hinsbeck, there are two more climbs for the bikes (Grefrather Straße and Höhenweg).
Through the forest area around the Krickenbecker Lakes, you will cycle back into the Netherlands, where you will follow a separate bike path along the glider airport and the Groote Heide to return to the starting point.
Characteristic of this route are the many asphalted roads that are closed to motor traffic (except for agricultural traffic); these roads are called 'Wirtschaftswege' in Germany. The roads on this route are often in good condition. However, there is often gravel or sand at the junctions of the Wirtschaftswege in the curves. Main roads are avoided as much as possible, but are crossed more frequently (which sometimes means being careful when crossing). Sometimes this is not possible (a total of 5 times), and you will follow the bike path along the main road (but at most over a distance of one kilometer). Overall, this means that this route is less suitable for large groups. Twice, you will encounter the exposed bike path along a former railway track between Kaldenkirchen and Grefrath (but again, at most over a distance of one kilometer).
