The location where the Opera Garnier was built was extremely damp. Despite eight pumps, the ground just couldn't be dried out. Therefore, the architect Garnier constructed a concrete cistern where the water was collected. This gave rise to the legend that the opera was built on an underground lake. This story was also used in The Phantom of the Opera, the tale by Gaston Leroux. There is also a legend that trout were bred in that lake.
