In the summer of 1956 the champion Fausto Coppi, during his holiday in Elba, used to train on the island's roads and stop to fill his water bottle with fresh water from a natural spring well known to the people of the island.
The fact, immortalized by some vintage photos, has been handed down over time, so much so that the town has dedicated in memory a marble stele installed just above the fountain and on which we read: "1960 - 2010, here the sample was quenched for fifty years on the run ".
The place is located just outside the town of Rio nell'Elba, in La Ginestra and has now become legendary for all cycling fans of Elba Island and beyond.
Also Paolo Bettini in 2016, with the Maglie Rosa of Gazzetta dello Sport and in June 2017 Vincenzo Nibali, on vacation at Elba after having gained the third place in the Giro d'Italia, stopped to drink at Fonte Coppi.
