As you drive up, you can see the 1841 tower mill and the Dutch Reformed church from 1612 from afar. The original IJzendijke [Iezendieke] in West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen was swallowed by the sea over five hundred years ago. Thanks to the Spanish Duke of Parma, the place was revived a few kilometers away in the form of a defensive stronghold.
Prince Maurits
In 1604, during the Eighty Years' War, Prince Maurits drove the Spanish out of ‘their’ fort Ysendijck and immediately had the fortifications restored. Today, you can find Prince Maurits in the charming Market, sitting behind a chessboard, thinking about the next strategic move.
