Description by the author

Last updated February 16, 2025: The Heukelomseweg is closed at the height of the Heukelomsebeek (the road is being raised and a dike is being built), and the closure will last until June 2025. Therefore, the route leads directly around Nieuw-Bergen. As a result, the route is 1.5 km shorter (the proportion of gravel on the entire route increases from 63% to 64%).

The area of the Maasduinen is excellent for cycling on gravel: The route partly follows the many unpaved (very fine gravel) bike paths in North Limburg. Often, gravel roads run directly next to these bike paths, so you won’t interfere with the leisure cyclists on the bike paths. There is another advantage of the gravel roads directly next to the gravel bike paths: The gravel bike paths have a gravel surface layer mixed with clay (which is not water-permeable), causing the gravel bike paths to remain wet longer than the adjacent gravel roads after periods of rain.

The route begins at the parking lot at Reindersmeer (near Bosbrasserie In De Sluis) close to Well and runs clockwise. 64% of the route consists of gravel (for all gravel sections and their lengths, see below). The route first runs along the Leukermeer and through the floodplains of the Maas. Near Nieuw-Bergen, you transition into other landscapes: You cycle through heathlands, small-scale cultural and agricultural landscapes, through forests, and along and over the characteristic Rivierduinen of this area, such as the Afferdense Bergen (or Afferdense Duinen), followed by het Quin (Berger Bos).

After crossing the northern Broederbosch, you cycle along the Bleijenbeek Castle Ruins and then through the river dunes of the Eckeltse Bergen. Next follows the crossing of the Berger Heide (with views of the river dunes). After that, you cycle along the east side of the Reindersmeer, followed by the municipal forests of Bergen, as you cycle directly along the river dunes towards Tuindorp. The route then heads toward Wellerlooi through the forests of the Landgoed de Hamert (with a short ascent towards the Dikkenberg). From Wellerlooi, you cycle towards Well, where you ride along the Maas and through the nature reserve De Baend (the (partly gravel) path through De Baend is not accessible during high water levels of the Maas). The route ends with the gravel bike paths on the south side along the Reindersmeer.

Some parts of the route may be busier on Sundays and public holidays in nice weather (namely the gravel bike paths along the Reindersmeer).
