From Allardsoog through the Bakkeveen Dunes
You start your walk in Allardsoog, from where you head into the dune area. Along the way, you pass the Oan ’e Wyk sheepfold, where the flock plays an important role in nature conservation. The sheep keep the grass and young trees short, giving the heath plenty of room to thrive. You then walk along winding sandy paths and through the rolling dunes of this special nature area.
You also cross the Mandefjild, where heathland, woodland and open stretches of sand combine to create a beautiful landscape. Along the way, you pass a pingo remnant, a remarkable relic from the last ice age. There are two of these special sites in the Mandefjild: Harmsdobbe and Pûpedobbe. They formed when large lenses of ice developed beneath the ground during the ice age. When the ice melted, bowl-shaped depressions were left behind, which later filled with water. In the past, these pools were used, among other things, to wash sheep. Today, they are valuable habitats for rare aquatic plants and dragonflies.
