Praça D. João II was redeveloped in 2001.
It shows visitors several celebrations of the Portuguese Discoveries , such as the patterns of the “five parts of the world”, the Mermaid Lake , several spherical fountains and, most notably, a large sundial .
The name of the square refers to the king who ordered the construction of the nearby customs office.
The many spherical fountains that spring from the ground are striking, as is a modern metal monument surrounded by a lake in which a statue of a mermaid stands. At the top of the square is the Socorro Chapel and lookout point.
