The Royal Chronicles of Ayutthaya date Wat Phra Ram to 1369 CE. King Ramesuan (reign 1369-1370/1388-1395 CE) ordered the construction of this monastery as a crematory site for his father, King U-Thong (also known as Ramathibodhi), who founded the Ayutthaya kingdom. However, Wat Phra Ram temple was probably not completed until the reign of Borommaracha I (1370-1388 CE).
Wat Phra Ram was restored once by King Borommatrailokanat (reign 1448-1488 CE) and once again by King Borommakot (reign 1733-1758 CE) in 1741 CE.
Wat Phra Ram is a beautiful sight to behold, mainly when the lotus-filled ponds of Bueng Phra Ram reflect its Khmer-style prang temple. There are also many mythological images preserved in stucco on site.
