Description by the author

This bicycle tour has been designed for a 70 km ride from Ayutthaya to the Aranyik area in Nakhon Luang and back. Main Points of Interest along this route are Thailand's only inland harbour called "Ayutthaya Port" on the Pa Sak River, the vihara of the reclining Buddha of Wat Pho Aranyik dating from the Ayutthayan era, and the Aranyik Knife Village with its museum.

Ban Aranyik in Tha Ruea District is the marketplace where handmade knives are sold from Ban Pai Nong and Ban Ton Pho in Nakhon Luang District. Aranyik knives are known for their good quality and sharpness. The Aranyik knives were so well-known that King Rama V went there many times to see how the knives were made firsthand. The ancestors of the Bang Pai Nong and Ban Ton Pho residents, most of them blacksmiths, came from Vientiane (Laos) and settled here during the reign of King Rama II. The village was also known for its gambling houses, which closed in the reign of King Rama V.

The tour will take about 4 to 5 hours depending on the weather conditions and your physical fitness. The whole track is paved.

If you are interested in viewing photographs of the temples and sites or would like additional historical information about some Points of Interest, visit our website at www.ayutthaya-history.com. As this is a bicycle training track, not all Points of Interest are posted. They are mainly for reference.

Tips and Warnings
Be cautious, as traffic is sometimes chaotic and dangerous. Motor vehicles often fail to see cyclists and pedestrians, so you must closely watch out for them. Motorcycles are a common cause of local accidents. Dogs and potholes can also be dangerous, especially in remote areas.
Be visible and wear yellow or orange colours. Use flashing rear bike lights during your bicycle trip. It is inadvisable to drive at night due to the lack of lighting.
The weather can be very hot, so drink plenty of fluids and wear sunblock. Cover the body parts as much as possible and wear a hat or, even better, a bike helmet. Stay hydrated!
Be sure to have a tyre repair kit with you, as flat tyres are common due to the poorly maintained roads and the lack of bicycle paths.
