El término es utilizado por el Club Alpino Austriaco en su clasificación de los Alpes Orientales como uno de los 24 subrangos de los Alpes de Caliza del Norte.
Las dos picos individuales de Grimming y Sarstein se contaron como parte de la cordillera de Dachstein porque ambos se han desprendido del bloque de caliza de Dachstein, a pesar de que están bastante separados desde una perspectiva hidrográfica y orográfica. Esta clasificación apareció ya en 1924 en la División Moriggl de los Alpes.
