La Universidad Católica de Malinas fue la precursora de la KU Leuven y estuvo ubicada en Malinas solo durante un año antes de mudarse definitivamente a Lovaina.
La universidad fue fundada el 8 de noviembre de 1834 por los obispos de Bélgica, según una carta del Papa Gregorio XVI dada el 13 de diciembre de 1833. El primer rector fue el sacerdote Pierre François Xavier de Ram. El 1 de diciembre de 1835, los obispos belgas aceptaron una invitación del ayuntamiento de Lovaina y la Universidad Católica se trasladó a esta ciudad, donde justo se había disuelto la Universidad Estatal.
