Como veterinario inspector, Karel Van Noppen tuvo que controlar a los ganaderos sobre el uso de hormonas. Después de varias amenazas, continuó con su trabajo. El 20 de febrero de 1995, su coche fue parado cerca de su casa en Wechelderzande y fue asesinado de tres disparos.
En abril de 2002, cuatro sospechosos fueron declarados culpables del asesinato: Carl De Schutter, Albert Barrez, Alex Vercauteren y Germain Daenen. Este grupo se ha hecho conocido como la "mafia de las hormonas".
