Donde hay agua, hay o había molinos. A lo largo del Herk en Wellen todavía puedes ver el Graetermolen y el Wellenmolen. Ahora te encuentras junto al Graetermolen. Ambos molinos alguna vez fueron activos como molinos de agua para grano. El lecho del Herk fue desviado para estos molinos ya en el siglo XIII, de la parte más baja del valle un poco más arriba. Este desvío y más tarde el enderezamiento, ensanchamiento y profundización del Herk han tenido un gran impacto en la gestión del agua de la zona. Sin mencionar la calidad del agua. Afortunadamente, esta ha ido mejorando poco a poco gracias a un mejor tratamiento del agua y conexiones al alcantarillado. Y eso es bueno para la naturaleza tanto en Broekbeemd como en Grote Beemd.
