Después del acuerdo migratorio belga-italiano de 1946, en el que Italia recibió carbón belga a cambio de la posibilidad de enviar trabajadores a Bélgica, llegaron solo en la región de Charleroi, en el apogeo de esa migración, alrededor de treinta mil italianos. Después del cierre de las minas de carbón de Valonia, se presume que solo el 20 por ciento de ellos regresó a su país de origen.
