En el siglo XIII, los monjes cistercienses construyeron la abadía de San Bernardo en Hemiksem. Con la Revolución Francesa, los monjes fueron expulsados. La abadía se convirtió en bienes nacionales y funcionó como hospital marítimo, prisión y depósito militar. En el marco del Plan Sigma, se cerró el Benedenvliet del Escalda y se construyó una compuerta de evacuación y un estanque de espera en la desembocadura. Antes de eso, el Vliet había sido durante mucho tiempo un importante curso de agua y navegable hasta Cleydaal.
