El Huis Ter Beurze solía ser parte del Oude Beursplein , junto con el Saaihalle (hoy el museo de las papas fritas) y el albergue florentino. La antigua plaza ahora es parte de Vlamingstraat.
A finales de la Edad Media, este fue el centro financiero de la ciudad. La plaza lleva el nombre de la familia Van der Buerse.
La vista de la plaza en ese momento se conoce gracias a una lámina de Flandria Illustrata de Antonius Sanderus (1641).
Desde el siglo XIV, surgió la costumbre entre los comerciantes italianos y otros de reunirse aquí para comerciar.
La bolsa de valores se llevó a cabo en la plaza misma y no en un edificio, pero varias casas en la plaza tenían marquesinas donde se podía buscar refugio de la intemperie. Los negocios en la plaza estaban estrictamente controlados. El comercio se abrió y se cerró en el timbre.
