Poco después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial (1947) aparecen los primeros bancos de madera maciza en el Zeedijk de Middelkerke. Al principio, eran verde y blanco, luego pintados en los colores de Middelkerke: azul y blanco. Estos primeros bancos de madera maciza fueron un diseño propio del middelerkerquense Rudolf Lombaert y fueron construidos por el carpintero local Maurice Minu con ‘madera congoleña’. Con el paso del tiempo, han permanecido inextricablemente ligados a la imagen del turístico Middelkerke.
