En este lugar se encontraba durante siglos un edificio de iglesia que se convirtió en un lugar de peregrinación en torno a la imagen milagrosa de María que arribó en 1596. Era una de las iglesias de peregrinación más antiguas de la región.
Justo antes de la Primera Guerra Mundial ya se estaba pensando en reemplazar la iglesia en ruinas. Durante la guerra, la iglesia fue completamente destr uida.
En 1919 se colocó primero una iglesia de emergencia, luego el dúo de arquitectos de Ostende, Charles Pil y Henri Carbon, diseñó los planos para un nuevo edificio de iglesia neo-románico que se completó en 1923.
La iglesita con la imagen de María sigue siendo un lugar de peregrinación para los pescadores de la zona. En los vitrales se representan muchos milagros atribuidos a la imagen milagrosa.
