El Musala es la cumbre más alta de Bulgaria y de toda la península de los Balcanes, con 2925 msnm. Musala es también el cuarto pico en Europa continental en cuanto a aislamiento topográfico.[1]El nombre deriva de Mus Allah, 'montaña de Alá' o 'montaña de Dios', siendo nombrada así durante el período en que Bulgaria formaba parte del Imperio otomano. Durante los años 1949-1962 a la montaña se le llamó Stalin, en honor a José Stalin.[2]
