Mannheim es, después de Stuttgart, la segunda ciudad más poblada de Baden-Wurtemberg, uno de los Estados federados de Alemania. Ciudad industrial junto con la ciudad de Ludwigshafen, situada al otro lado del Rin, forma una aglomeración urbana que supera los 310.000 habitantes.
Es un importante nudo ferroviario y un gran puerto fluvial en la confluencia de los ríos Rin y Neckar.
