Hochemmerich, con 17,943 habitantes, es uno de los antiguos núcleos de asentamiento de la ciudad de Rheinhausen, formada en 1934, que se convirtió en el distrito de Rheinhausen de Duisburgo el 1 de enero de 1975.
Con el tiempo, el significado del nombre Hochemmerich cambió. Como parroquia, existió Hochemmerich aproximadamente desde el 900, como alcaldía.
