Hay una leyenda de que Bremen permanecerá libre e independiente mientras el guardián Roland vigile la ciudad. Por esta razón, se afirma que una segunda estatua de Roland se mantiene oculta en las bóvedas subterráneas del ayuntamiento, que puede ser instalada rápidamente como reemplazo en caso de que la original caiga.
La estatua ha sido incluida en la lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO.
