Cuatro ursulinas - entre ellas dos hijas del conde del Reich von Nesselrode-Reichenstein de Herten - llegan el 21 de enero desde el monasterio madre en Colonia a Dorsten. Con el objetivo de educar a jóvenes en la fe cristiana, abren en la "Casa Alta" en la calle Blindestraße (hoy: Ursulastraße) una escuela elemental gratuita y una escuela para niñas con internado. Tras adquirir más casas, la "Casa Alta" se convierte en la iglesia del monasterio. Hoy en día, las ursulinas dirigen un importante gimnasio y una escuela secundaria.
