Bajo el reinado de Felipe II, el corregidor cordobés mandó construir una fuente para mejorar el abastecimiento de agua de la comarca .
Construido en 1577 , fue coronado un siglo después por el gracioso potro que lo montaba. Originalmente se encontraba donde ahora se encuentra el Triunfo de San Rafael , pero fue trasladada a su ubicación actual en 1847. Parece ser que el nombre de esta plaza y de la fuente proviene del caballito , y también se supone que debe su nombre al posada del mismo nombre.
