La fortaleza Medici de Volterra fue construida en el punto más alto de la colina en la que se encuentra la ciudad: desde el exterior se ve verdaderamente majestuosa e imponente.
La estructura consta de dos edificios conectados por altos muros defensivos: la Rocca Vecchia, también conocida como Cassero, construida en 1342 por el duque de Atenas Gualtieri VI de Brienne, gobernador de Florencia y modificada por Lorenzo el Magnífico, y la Rocca Nuova, conocida como Il Mastio, construido por el propio Lorenzo el Magnífico entre 1472 y 1474.
Hoy en día, el edificio se utiliza como prisión estatal de mediana seguridad, que no es accesible ni visitable.
