Las dos torres originales datan de la época normanda (siglo XII) y estaban conectadas al Castillo de Venus por un puente levadizo. Posteriormente se construyó una tercera torre y una muralla, con una puerta de entrada rematada por un arco con el escudo de los Austrias españoles.
En los siglos siguientes el complejo cayó en mal estado. Fue cedida al municipio durante la Reforma borbónica (1818-1819) y fue entregada en concesión al conde Agostino Sieri Pepoli, quien inició su renovación en 1872 y reconstruyó la torre pentagonal , que había sido derribada. También creó un jardín público inglés (Giardino del Balio).
