El palacio fue construido en la primera mitad del siglo XVIII y terminado alrededor de 1780 por el príncipe Pietro di Valguarnera.
El Palacio Valguarnera no sólo es único en el panorama siciliano, sino también un punto culminante del rococó italiano por la escala de su diseño arquitectónico, la calidad y riqueza de sus decoraciones y el hecho de que ha llegado prácticamente ileso al umbral del siglo XXI.
En su interior se pueden admirar: el Salón de Honor , con un techo pintado en 1792 por Elia Interguglielmi y que representa la 'Gloria del Príncipe Virtuoso' ; la Galería de los Espejos, con un doble techo a través del cual se puede ver el gran fresco central a través de aberturas en el techo inferior; el Salón Amarillo donde se pintó al fresco el 'Triunfo de las virtudes necesarias para el Príncipe' , pintado por Gaspare Serenario en 1754.
El palacio inspiró al director Luchino Visconti para la ambientación de la famosa escena del baile de la película El Leopardo, basada en la novela de Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa.
