El área de Middag Humsterland fue alguna vez un mar con las islas de marismas Humsterland y Middag. Las islas estaban rodeadas por canales de marea que, durante la pleamar, llevaban el agua del mar hacia el interior. Estas inundaciones ocurrieron desde el oeste, desde el Lauwerszee, ahora el Lauwersmeer, después de que se desvirtuó en 1969.
