Se encuentra al suroeste de Balk y al oeste de Lemmer, entre Rijs y Nijemirdum, y cerca del IJsselmeer. El pueblo está rodeado por las áreas naturales/ bosques de Elfbergen, el bosque de Jolderen y el acantilado de Oudemirdumer. En 2021, el pueblo tenía 1.380 habitantes. También incluye las aldeas de Marderhoek y Schouw.
