La Weersluis es una de las tres esclusas entre el Vecht y los estanques de Loosdrecht. Estas esclusas ya se construyeron en el siglo XVII para transportar turba de los pantanos al Vecht. El Vecht no solo era la principal vía de transporte. A partir de finales del siglo XVII (la antigua línea de agua holandesa) y aún más en el siglo XIX (la nueva línea de agua holandesa), el Vecht proporcionaba el agua para inundar los pastizales situados a menor altura. En la época de la línea de agua, las esclusas, junto con los nuevos desagües y pequeñas esclusas de inundación, servían para permitir que el agua del río entrara en la tierra y mantener el nivel del agua. Al cerrar las puertas de la esclusa o apilar traviesas en las pequeñas esclusas de inundación, se evitaba que el agua fluyera de nuevo hacia el Vecht.
