La 'Batalla por la sombra', descrita por A. Korthals Altes en el libro del mismo nombre, tuvo lugar en el territorio de los municipios de Asten, Deurne, Nederweert y (en ese momento) Meijel. Después de que la 7ª División Acorazada de EE. UU. resistiera frente a una abrumadora superioridad alemana, fue tarea de la 15ª División Escocesa, junto con los estadounidenses, limpiar las áreas rurales de soldados alemanes. En esos combates, cientos de militares perdieron la vida. Las aldeas eclesiásticas de Deurne, Liessel y Neerkant lamentaron además numerosas víctimas civiles. En 1992, se erigió en Liessel este digno monumento en memoria de todas las víctimas de la guerra.
