La Avenida Visconde Guedes Teixeira es la principal vía de la ciudad, que comienza en el Largo de Camões (frente al antiguo Palacio Episcopal y la Catedral ) y termina al pie de las escaleras del Santuario de los Remédios.
Se trata de una amplia avenida pavimentada, dividida en su parte central por un paseo bellamente ajardinado. Discurre entre un bosque, con césped con flores y pequeñas vallas que forman dibujos geométricos, varias fuentes ornamentales (destaca la fuente del Cochicho) y bancos para sentarse.
En la intersección con la Avenida 5 de Octubre hay una rotonda donde se encuentra el Monumento al Soldado Desconocido .
