En Nyköping, la reina Cristina hizo una breve parada en el castillo donde vivía la reina madre María Leonora para despedirse. Fue la última vez que las dos mujeres se encontraron: María Eleonora moriría al cabo de un año. La relación entre ellos era problemática, sobre todo por los años oscuros que madre e hijo vivieron juntos en Nyköping tras la muerte del padre del rey Cristina, el rey Gustavo Adolfo. En 1665 el castillo se quemó junto con la ciudad. Posteriormente se reconstruyeron partes del complejo. Del castillo original, la puerta de entrada (entre el castillo y la iglesia de enfrente) es la mejor conservada. Hoy el edificio se utiliza como museo histórico. (Grabado del siglo XVII, fragmento).
