El castillo llamado Malmöhus, fue construido en 1434 por Eric de Pomerania –en esos momentos rey de Dinamarca, Noruega y Suecia– fue destruido en el 1534 durante una revuelta popular. El rey Cristian III mando construir uno nuevo sobre sus restos. En el siglo XVIII se convirtió en prisión hasta 1828 en que recibió el nombre de Malmöhus y correccional con el nombre de Workhouse. Durante la época dedicada a la prisión el edificio sufrió numerosas reformas, se abrieron cuantiosas ventanas, corredores y puertas.
En 1937 se convirtió en el actual Malmö Museet, en el que se recogen piezas de la historia de la ciudad, por ejemplo el órgano antiguo de Sankt Petri Kyrka, referencias al arte decorativo, la arqueología, etc. Dispone de una amplia combinación de estilos semejante a la arquitectura de la ciudad.
