Le centre-ville de Grödig se trouve à 7,5 km au sud de celui de Salzbourg, son altitude avoisine les 450 mètres, et la ville se trouve au pied de l'Untersberg , montagne des Alpes de Berchtesgaden qui fait frontière avec l'Allemagne.La première installation humaine au sud de la ville actuelle date de l'Âge du bronze ; puis le site est abandonné. Sous l'époque romaine se bâtie une cité, et sont exploitées des carrières de marbre ) aux environs du hameau actuel de Fürstenbrunn .
