Le château de Rif est situé dans la commune cadastrale de Taxach de la ville de Hallein dans le district de Hallein du Land de Salzbourg. Il est classé monument historique. En 1125, le nom d'un Fridericus de Rifaren apparaît dans un document du comte Berengar de Sulzbach, que l'on pourrait localiser à Rif. Dans un document délivré par l'empereur Frédéric II, le nom Riue est mentionné, dérivé du latin ripa ; le domaine correspondant était la propriété du chapitre de la cathédrale de Salzbourg.
