En avril 1349, une lettre est lue ici, annonçant une énorme crise et épidémie. C'est une lettre de Louis Heyligen de Beringen, qui occupe une position importante à la cour du pape d'Avignon. La peste est en route. Louis Heyligen raconte qu'en janvier 1349, un bateau est arrivé à Marseille. Les personnes à bord étaient atrocement infectées. Il indique que la moitié des habitants d'Avignon sont déjà morts. Il est préférable de rester enfermé chez soi jusqu'à ce que l'épidémie soit passée.
