Les phares font actuellement l'objet de nombreux livres et documentaires, signe évident de leur déclin. Tous les phares de la côte sont soit hors service, soit actionnés automatiquement. Fini le bon temps où le gardien de phare veillait en solitaire depuis les hauteurs de son poste d'observation. Le phare de Heist (avenue Royale) est un superbe exemple Jugendstil, datant du début du XXe siècle. Cet imposant édifice de 34 mètres de haut fut la première construction en béton du littoral belge. Il a récemment subi des travaux de restauration.
