Salzwedel est une ville allemande chef-lieu de l'arrondissement d'Altmark-Salzwedel située dans le Land de Saxe-Anhalt. Elle compte 20 331 habitants. Son nom officiel est Hansestadt Salzwedel en référence à la Hanse.
En 1943, le Camp de concentration de Neuengamme construisit un sous-camp à Salzwedel, capable de contenir 1,000 femmes prisonnières. Plus tard le camp abrita plus de 3 000 femmes, juives et non-juives. Le camp était gardé par 60 SS environ.
