Linnich se trouve au nord, et est la troisième en taille de l'arrondissement de Düren en Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie, Allemagne.
Avant le 1er janvier 1972 elle appartenait à l'arrondissement de Juliers.
La cité fut probablement fondée par des Celtes, mais la première mention écrite du lieu date de 888, et elle fut élevée au rang de ville au XIVe siècle.
