Schweinfurt est une ancienne ville franche indépendante qui fait partie aujourd’hui d’une circonscription administrative bavaroise de Basse-Franconie . C’est la troisième ville de Basse-Franconie après Wurtzbourg et Aschaffenbourg, et elle est le siège d’un chef-lieu d'arrondissement.
Schweinfurt est une ancienne ville impériale avec 1 200 ans d’histoire. Du temps de l’empire allemand, la ville était une ville impériale libre. Elle a été incorporée aux territoires réorganisés de la République fédérale d'Allemagne après la seconde guerre mondiale.
