Sanssouci est l'ancien palais d'été de Frédéric le Grand, roi de Prusse.
Frédéric a demandé au grand mathématicien Leonhard Euler d'installer un jet d'eau ici dans son jardin. Euler a calculé la force des roues nécessaire pour élever l'eau vers un réservoir, mais d'une manière ou d'une autre, cela n'a pas fonctionné. Frédéric a montré très clairement sa déception vis-à-vis d'Euler. À la fin, Euler a dû quitter Berlin en raison de ses différends avec Frédéric le Grand. Il est retourné à l'Académie de Saint-Pétersbourg.
Ces différends étaient alimentés par le philosophe Voltaire, qui souhaitait établir sa position à la cour de Frédéric le Grand.
