Le Col d'Aubisque est apparu dans le Tour de France en 1910, franchi par François Lafourcade. Il y est apparu fréquemment depuis, plus d'une fois tous les deux ans. Il a été inclus à l'insistance d'Alphone Steinès, un collègue d'Henri Desgrange au Tour de France. Steinès a rendu visite à l'homme responsable des routes locales, l'ingénieur des ponts et chaussées, qui a dit : "Faire monter les coureurs à l'Aubisque ? Vous êtes complètement folle à Paris."
