C'est ici en 1798 que Napoléon part avec son armée pour une invasion de l'Égypte. Pas moins de 200 scientifiques ont rejoint les troupes pour saisir l'occasion, de manière très opportuniste, de recueillir des «informations» en Égypte. Une personne qui voulait également se joindre était le célèbre scientifique et explorateur Alexander von Humboldt. Il a tenté de les rejoindre via Marseille, mais sans succès.
