Il a été construit à partir de 1878 par l'État sur des terrains qu'il avait lui-même achetés à la commune et à des particuliers. Il a été terminé en 1890. Il renferme les ossements d'environ 3000 soldats français et allemands. En application d'une convention en date du 1er mars 1951, entre le ministère des Anciens Combattants (Bureau Sépultures) et le Comité, c'est à ce dernier d'assumer le coût (onéreux) de son entretien. Sa terrasse a dû être refaite entièrement en 1999.Il suffit pour le visiter de le demander au gardien de la maison.
