Geoffrey de Monmouth a dit que Merlin l'enchanteur a dirigé son enlèvement d'Irlande, où il avait été construit sur la (non existante) montagne légendaire du Mont Killaraus par des géants, qui ont apporté les pierres d'Afrique. Après avoir été reconstruit près d'Amesbury, Geoffrey raconte comment d'abord Ambrosius Aurelianus, puis Uther Pendragon, et enfin Constantin III, furent enterrés à l'intérieur de l'anneau de pierres.
